As Argentina prepares for Sunday's World Cup final, annual inflation in the country is expected to hit 99% this month, with economists expecting it to top three figures soon, according to Bloomberg.
In 1986, when Diego Maradona led Argentina to victory, inflation averaged 116%. According to central bank data and surveys, the rate in 1978, when Argentina won the tournament it hosted, was 176%.
Lionel Messi, born a year after the 1986 triumph and hailed by fans as the heir to Maradona's legendary status, will make his final World Cup game against France. The team's run to the last match, inspired by their hero, has thrilled a nation once again experiencing severe economic circumstances.
However, this consistent economic element of the country is not a predictor of the country's World Cup success. The team lost the 1990 final despite hyperinflation of over 2,000% at the time. When it lost the 2014 final, the official rate was only 22%, but there was suspicion that the administration altered the numbers.
